What is Diwali?

Diwali is India’s ‘Festival of Light’, a time when people celebrate good conquering evil, light conquering darkness. This celebration of new beginnings coincides with the Hindu New Year and the start of a new business year, so there are prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the god of wisdom and luck, for a successful year. It’s the biggest event in the Hindu calendar. The festivities take place over five days, with the festival itself falling on the third day.

Traditionally every home will set out tiny clay pots with wicks and oil called "diyas" all around their home. Eating is a central part of the festivities, and feasts are prepared in much the same way as Christians do for Christmas - except that there’s no set dish, as families have their own traditional Diwali favorites.

Have a very Happy Diwali and we look forward to seeing you at our Fraser River Park show home.
